While in the cast, he climbed my den bookshelves, hung upside down from the chicken bar in my car, and somehow managed to get the cast halfway off while eating breakfast. The doctor’s mouth fell open and he said, “Oh no.” Logan took off like an Olympic runner down the hallway. The doctor gave him a high five, looked at me smugly as if that was that, and opened the door. You don’t want to break your arm again.”ĭoctor: (All proud) “Yes, no rough play.” So the doctor sat Logan down for a serious conversation:ĭoctor: “You can’t run or jump until your arm heals.”ĭoctor: “Because if you fall, your arm will break again.”ĭoctor: “No, no. He said yes, but Logan can’t fall on it because it’s not healed yet, so no running, jumping etc… I asked him how I was supposed to keep him from doing any of that. I asked him if he was sure that was a good idea. The doctor said he was putting a short cast on instead of a long cast. When he was two, he jumped off the back of the couch and broke his arm. If you could climb up it, jump or slide off it, or swing from it, he did. (FYI, they didn’t make it, but neither of them were hurt when they fell.) My husband found her and a friend swinging together on a vine over a dug out basement when they were building a house across the street from her friend’s house. I came home one day and found her jumping off the roof of the shed, over the fence, and into the neighbor’s yard. She got her head stuck between two railings, got her knee stuck between two railings at Disney World, and fell off the top of the refrigerator when she stacked things up to and on the counter top so she could climb up and get a cookie. My daughter once wrapped my father’s belt around her waist and buckled it, then hung it over a doorknob so she could fly. But, boy, you couldn’t take your eyes off them for a moment when they were toddlers. My son is only eleven now, so I don’t know how his curiosity and independence will serve him, but my daughter is thirty-one, and they have served her well in life.
